India and New Zealand in WTC 2019-21

ICC World Test Championship 2019-2021 is the first-ever edition of the ICC Test cricket championship. The tournament officially started on 1st August 2019 with the Ashes series between England and Australia and will conclude with the final Test match on 18th June 2021 at the Rose Bowl stadium, England.

The championship started nearly a decade after the ICC (International Cricket Council) approved the idea for an international Test cricket championship in 2010 and after two canceled attempts to hold the WTC in 2013 and 2017.

The World Test Championship by ICC features nine out of twelve Test-playing nations. Each of these nations was scheduled to play six Test series, one against each team. The ICC scheduled three home and three away series. However, due to the prevailing coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, several rounds of matches got postponed and canceled. The finalists of the WTC were decided by the ICC on a percentage of points basis.

India and New Zealand are the two teams that top the points table and will be playing the final Test match of the World Test Championship 2019-2021. Now let’s take a closer look at the performance of the two finalists throughout the tournament.

India in the World Test Championship 2019-21

India played a total of 6 series and ended up winning 5 out of them. The men in blue played 17 matches, won 12, lost 4, and had 1 game drawn. They top the points table of the WTC with a win percentage of 520.

  • West Indies Vs. India 2019 (India won)

India played their first WTC series in August-September 2019 against West Indies. It was a two-match series, and India won both matches with a massive margin.

  • Freedom Trophy: India Vs. South Africa (India won)

Freedom trophy was a three-match series played in October 2019, which India won by 3-0.

  • Ganguly-Durjoy Trophy: India Vs. Bangladesh (India won)

Ganguly-Durjoy Trophy was a two-match series played in November 2019. India won both the matches by an innings and 130 and 46 runs, respectively.

  • New Zealand Vs. India (India lost)

This was the only series in the World Test Championship 2019-2021 that team India lost. It was a two-match series played in February 2020 on which New Zealand won both the matches by 10 and 7 wickets, respectively.

  • Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Australia Vs. India (India won)

India played the renowned Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December 2020 and January 2021 against Australia. It was a three-match series in which India won the first and third Test by 8 wickets and 3 wickets respectively, while the second match was drawn.

  • Anthony De Mello Trophy: India Vs. England (canceled)

The ICC scheduled Anthony de Mello Trophy in March 2021. However, the tournament got canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

New Zealand in the World Test Championship 2019-21

New Zealand played a total of 5 series and ended up winning 3 out of them. They have 1 series drawn and 1 lost. The black caps played 11 matches, won 7, lost 4, and had no games drawn. They stand second on the points table of the WTC with a win percentage of 420.

  • Sri Lanka Vs. New Zealand (series drawn)

Team New Zealand started their ICC World Test Championship 2019-2021 journey with a two-match series against Sri Lanka. Lanka won the first match while New Zealand won the second match of the series. It was a drawn series played in August 2019.

  • Trans-Transman Trophy: Australia Vs. New Zealand (New Zealand lost)

Trans-Transman Trophy played between December 2019, and January 2020 was a three matches series which Australia won by 3-0 with huge margins.

  • New Zealand Vs. India (New Zealand won)

New Zealand won their first series of the WTC against India. It was a two-match series, and the black caps won both the matches by 10 wickets and 7 wickets, respectively. Both the finalist teams played this series in February 2020 and will now be playing the WTC final in June 2021.

  • Bangladesh Vs. New Zealand (canceled)

The two-match series between Bangladesh and New Zealand, which was to be played in August 2020, got canceled due to Covid-19.

  • New Zealand Vs. West Indies (New Zealand won)

New Zealand won the December 2020 series against West Indies. The black caps won both the matches of the Test series.

  • New Zealand Vs. Pakistan

New Zealand played Pakistan for a one Test match series which they won by 101 runs. With this win, they make it up to the final Test match of the inaugural session of the World Test Championship.
